Definition

This is used in the form of additional information presented in text format possibly written on paper or individual whiteboards. Children use them to accompany the drama and add extra information or to support the drama.

Purpose

  • To practice collaborative creation – ‘including’ rather than ‘blocking’ one another’s ideas
  • To practise generating ideas for story creation
  • To explore a character’s back story which could lead to the way the character acts in the present
  • To empathise with the character

Example

The children may create a narrated scene to explain the different methods of seed dispersal. Subtitles, written on pieces of card or individual white boards, could reinforce key scientific vocabulary (plant name, type of seed, method of seed dispersal) to complement the oral narration and reinforce the scientific learning.
