Definition

Children create a line to rate how they feel about a particular point of view or a given character. The Lead Adult can then explore why the children hold this perception.

Purpose

  • To consider differing opinions (For example in history, science, geography or a story)
  • To consider reasons for and against an idea
  • To prepare for persuasive writing
  • To prepare for discursive writing
  • To prepare for writing a character’s response to a dilemma

Example

This strategy could be used with the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin to explore the children’s perceptions of the Pied Piper, The Mayor or the three surviving children. With an Opinion Line for the Mayor, the line could range from agreeing with the decision not to pay the Pied Piper to viewing the non-payment as a terrible decision. Once the children have selected their position in the line the Lead Adult can Thought Tap the children to explore their thinking.
